Service Auction - POSTPONED - DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

Sisters, we would love to see you at our quarterly enrichment meeting that will celebrate the birthday of the Relief Society!! We will be having a service auction, because service is an integral part of the Relief Society. We all need and can provide service to others. The dress is church dress.

At the service auction you will be handed a list of questions to answer and you will earn "points" based on your answers to the questions. An example might be, did you wash your dishes, or did you read your scriptures that day? After tallying up your points - no one sees your answers but you - you will tell the "banker" how many points you had and she will give you "money" for those points. You will use this money to bid on items that are auctioned.

You will need to bring at least one item to be auctioned. If you bring a guest it would be much appreciated if you could bring something for them. The intent is that each sister will go home with at least one item. If you're able to bring more than one, that's even better - then there will be more to "win".

Some examples of "items" you can bring are a plate of cookies, brownies, a loaf of homemade bread, or other baked goods. You can bring a blanket or other item that you sewed, a photo frame that you decoupaged, a scrapbook (with no pictures, obviously) you made, or any other hand-made item you are crafty enough to make.

I'm not crafty - you might be saying, or perhaps you don't think highly of your own baking skills. Well, you can donate a service! Perhaps you'll donate a piano lesson or lessons, or a haircut, or you'll mop someone's kitchen for them, or watch their children for them to go on a date, or to the temple. The possibilities of acts of service that you can provide are endless. They're especially easy to donate more than "one" of to ensure that there are plenty of items for everyone to win. You don't have to bring more than one thing though - if you can't, that's perfectly fine.

Starting next week at church a list will go around for you to put your name on and the service/s or item/s you will be donating. This is to help you make up your mind and also will ease the burden on the Enrichment Committee the night of the event. They will be writing the items/names on slips of paper to place with the things you bring (or to represent the service you've offered). When an item is won, the winner gets one slip and the sister who donated the item gets another - with the name of the winner on it. This way sisters will know who to contact, if needed, for the redemption of a service.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me or give me a call and I would be glad to answer them for you!!! We are super excited about this event and hope that you are too!! Bring a friend!!

Food Storage and Emergency Preparedness Group Meeting

The ladies of the Dover 1st Ward got together last week at Sis M. McClellan's house to learn how to make a cake from all food storage ingredients. That's right!! No eggs, no milk, nothing from your fridge. Here was Sis M. McClellan's first attempt before the ladies arrived. What is wrong with this picture?

I wasn't going to share this picture, but Sis H. Siebach thought I should. This is what happens when you can't read, and you put in 1/4 c baking soda instead of 1 tsp. It also tastes extremely unpleasant. Very bitter. Yucky. Sis H. Siebach pulled it out of the trash so we could show you.

Here is the pretty version, and it tasted much better!

As promised, below is the recipe and it is from the blog "Safely Gathered In" which you can go to by clicking HERE. The link to the exact recipe we used, along with step-by-step pictures you can get to by clicking HERE.

Chocolate Snack Cake

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup baking cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil (I use canola)
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup cold water

1. Preheat oven to 350. Sift dry ingredients in bowl.
2. Mix oil, vinegar, vanilla, and water and mix into dry ingredients.
3. Stir until well-blended, about a minute. Immediately pour into greased and floured pan.
4. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes.

This recipe is copied from the Safely Gathered in website, and it is courtesy of Betty Crocker.

Here is a variation that I made for my family later where I added in about 1/4 c peanut butter chips and 1/8 c mini semi-sweet chips.

Welcome!

We are excited to start this blog for the Dover 1st Ward Enrichment sisters. This is our inaugural post. Shortly you will see the one we create with the ladies who are attending the "learn to blog" class as Sis M. McClellan's house at that time. She'll be showing them how to insert pictures on a blog and then everyone who visits the blog will get to see them. The pics she'll be posting are from our very first Food Storage and Emergency Preparedness group meeting last week. Some yummy cakes were made (well, ONE yummy cake at least....).

Please leave a comment on any of the posts (by clicking the word comments with a number in front of it at the end of the post) and let us know if you have any suggestions for links in the sidebar that others might enjoy knowing about. We will review your suggestions and add what is appropriate. Thank you, and enjoy!
